Unlike in some European countries where routine roadworthiness inspections can be performed at local independent garages or brand dealerships, Spanish vehicle testing is centralized. Inspection centers (ITV stations) are official, state-regulated facilities located in or near most major towns and cities across Spain.
The Inspection Process
Upon arrival at the ITV station for your pre-booked inspection, you must register your arrival at one of the self-service touch-screen terminals. You are then called to an administrative window where your vehicle documentation is thoroughly verified before you pay the official inspection fee. Once cleared, you wait in your vehicle until your license plate number is displayed, directing you to your assigned testing lane.
Hands-On Testing
In Spain, vehicle inspections are interactive. Rather than leaving your car with a mechanic while you grab a coffee, you must drive the vehicle through the inspection lane yourself under the direction of the inspector. You will be instructed to perform specific actions—such as driving onto rollers for brake efficiency testing, operating the steering, wipers, and lights, and driving over an inspection pit where the inspector checks the underside, suspension, and chassis.
