Foreign cars in Spain – The Law

We have heard many stories over the years about different regional Guardia Civil units interpreting vehicle regulations strictly. However, official Spanish customs and traffic rules allow non-residents to keep a foreign-registered vehicle in Spain for a maximum of 183 days (6 months) in any 12-month period.

It is important to note that you cannot drive your car in Spain for the second half of one calendar year and roll straight into the first six months of the next. The 183-day limit applies to a rolling 12-month window, meaning the vehicle cannot remain in Spain continuously for a full year without being officially imported or re-exported.

When bringing a foreign vehicle into Spain, keep the following in mind:

  1. Roadworthiness Test: You must ensure the vehicle holds a valid mandatory inspection certificate from its country of registration throughout its entire stay in Spain (e.g., MOT in the UK, TÜV in Germany, Contrôle Technique in France, ITV in Spain/Italy, or equivalent national inspection). If this inspection expires, the vehicle cannot legally be driven on Spanish roads.
  2. Taxation & Registration in Home Country: The vehicle must remain fully taxed, registered, and legal to drive in its home country. Spanish traffic authorities (Guardia Civil and Tráfico) can verify the vehicle's legal status with foreign registries.
  3. Insurance: You must have a valid insurance policy covering extended stays and international driving in Spain. Standard domestic policies in many countries usually only provide cross-border cover for 30, 60, or 90 days per trip. In the event of an accident, you may be required to provide proof of travel dates (such as ferry tickets, fuel receipts, or border crossings).
  4. Residency Status: If you become a legal resident (residencia) in Spain, you lose the non-resident driving privilege immediately. Spanish residents are legally required to register their foreign vehicle onto Spanish plates (matriculación) within 30 days of establishing residency.
