Non-EU Vehicles & Relocating to Spain

Importing a Vehicle from Outside the European Union:
Bringing a vehicle into Spain from a non-EU country (such as the UK, Switzerland, the US, or other regions) involves additional administrative steps compared to an EU import. Non-EU vehicles generally require customs clearance (Aduanas) upon entry and may be subject to import duties, VAT, and Spanish registration taxes.
In addition, because vehicles manufactured for non-EU markets may not come with a standard European Certificate of Conformity (CoC), an individual engineering report (Ficha Técnica Reducida) or technical approval is often required before the car can pass its import inspection (ITV).
Moving to Spain? You May Qualify for Tax Relief
If you are relocating to Spain and establishing official residency (residencia), you may be able to take advantage of special tax relief options available for personal belongings under a Transfer of Residence (Cambio de Residencia).
Transfer of ResidenceCambio de Residencia
Under the appropriate conditions, qualifying new residents can significantly reduce or even waive certain customs duties, import VAT, and Spanish vehicle registration taxes when bringing their primary personal vehicle with them.
General Guidelines to Consider:
Vehicle Ownership:
You typically need to have owned and registered the vehicle in your name in your previous country of residence for a minimum period before moving.
Strict Time Limits:
Applications for residency-based vehicle imports must be submitted within specific timeframes relative to obtaining your Spanish residency and clearing customs.
Residency History:
You must be able to demonstrate that you lived outside Spain prior to making the move.
Post-Import Conditions:
Vehicles registered under transfer-of-residence provisions are usually subject to restrictions regarding sale or transfer for a specified period after registration.
Navigating customs regulations and residency exemptions can be complex. We assess your specific scenario and handle the entire application process—from paperwork and engineering reports to final registration—helping you secure any exemptions you may qualify for while keeping the process completely stress-free.
